NTGP Official project launch-October 19, 2011

Citwan National Park, Sauraha- Nepal Tiger Genome Project was formally launched on October 19, 2011, at the Nepal Trust for Nature Conservation hall in Sauraha. This two year project started in Jjune, 2011 with the generous support from the American people through USAID for broader conservation of Bengal tigers in Nepal.

Dr. KC Paudel from Nepal Government’s’ Ministry of Forest and Soil Conservation was the chief guest for the event and the event was chaired by Dr. Maheshwor Dhakal- Ecologist, Department of National Park and Wildlife Conservation, Nepal. The chief guest, Dr. KC Paudel, launched the program amongst officials and representatives from USAID Nepal, DNPWC, WWF Nepal, NTNC, WCN, Chitwan National Park, Bardia National Park, Suklaphanta Wildlife Reserve, TAL conservation Unit, Chitwan District Development committee, along with some media personnel from various national and international outlets.

Principal Investigator for NTGP Mr. Dibesh Karmacharya gave a brief overview on the objectives, methodologies and timeline of the project. Dr. K.C Poudel, MoFSC, Dr. Maheshwor Dhakal, DNPWC, Mr. John Stamm, USAID Nepal and Mr. Netra Sharma Sapkota, USAID Nepal expressed their thoughts about utility of genetics based tool in nature conservation . They emphasized the need for collaborative efforts to assist effective conservation efforts in Nepal. Deputy warden of Chitwan National Park, Mr. Lal Bihari Yadav , Mr. Ram Bahadur Aryal, NTNC, Mr. Santosh Nepal, WWF and Mr. Purrna Bahadur Kunwar, TAL showed their enthusiasm on developing new technologies for conservation and offered their help.

This event was covered by various national dailies and international media. PI- Mr. Dibesh Karmacharya, CMDN, CO-PI, Mr. Kanchan Thapa, Virginia Tech and Dr. Maheshwor Dhakal, DNPWC interacted with the press to elaborate more about the project, its objectives and collaboration.
